Street Front Wilmington, IL, 2019
For Route 66 aficionados, Wilmington is known as the home of the Gemini Giant, a 30-foot-tall fiberglass statue of giant, named for the Gemini space program. Dressed in a space suit, helmet and holding a silver rocket ship, the Gemini Giant stands in the parking lot of a restaurant, appropriately called The Launching Pad, which was recently rescued from ruins, restored and reopened. To me, however, a main attraction in Wilmington is its downtown, with vintage stores in various stages of creation, decline, and recreation.
